African Instituted Churches

Diversities, Growth, Gifts, Spirituality and Ecumenical Understanding of African Initiated Churches

Series no.:18 Beiträge zur Missionswissenschaft und interkulturellen Theologie

Bd. 18, 2002, 232 Pages., 25.90 EUR, br., ISBN 3-8258-6087-6

One of the striking features of the changed demography of world Christianity has been the emergence and growth of the African Instituted Churches (AICs).

This volume grew out of discussions with students at Symposia, Seminars and Conferences at various universities in Europe.

This book is therefore provided for those who desire to study the African initiatives in Christianity. The book is intended to serve as a valuable material to teachers and students of African Instituted Churches.

The customs, culture and traditions of the African or any other peoples of the world are to serve as beautiful compliments to the Christian faith and belief, and not diametrically opposed to it.

His Eminence, Most Reverend Dr. Rufus Okikiolaolu Olubiyi OSITELU is the incumbent Primate of the Church of the Lord (Aladura) Organization Worldwide and a PhD holder in both Computer Science and Philosophy of Religion (Theology). He has written several books and has presented several papers at tertiary institutions, conferences, seminars and academic journals.

African Initiatives in Christianity

The growth, gifts and diversities of indigenous African churches

A challenge to the ecumenical movement

Risk Book Series no.: 83, 1998, 73 Pages, br., ISBN 2-8254-1277-5

In the continent where Christianity is experiencing its most rapid growth, a great deal of this expansion is taking place in churches founded by Africans for Africans.

Diverse as they are, the attractiveness of these African Initiatives in Christianity (AICs) grows out of the serious attempt they make to express and live out their faith in genuinely African cultural forms and styles.

In this book, two African theologians and church leaders – one from an historic church (old mission church), one from an AIC (new mission church) – offer an insightful introduction into this phenomenon. While their main focus is on what the growth of African Initiatives in Christianity implies for the future of the ecumenical movement in Africa and around the world, they also examine some key teachings of the AICs and trace their roots in African church history since the first century.

John S. Pobee is an Anglican theologian from Ghana and a staff member in the WCC’s Programme on Ecumenical Theological Education.

Gabriel Olusegun Ositelu, who died in April 1998, was the third Primate of the Church of the Lord (Aladura) Organization Worldwide, the headquarters of the Church is based in Ogere, Ogun State, Nigeria. The Church has been a member of the World Council of Churches since 1975.
